Film Carriage Not Moving

Film carriage not travelling up or down the mast, stopping mid-wrap, or trying to move then stalling? This fault is usually caused by a lift / pre-stretch drive issue, a sensor or safety condition not being satisfied, or a motor / inverter fault preventing the carriage from running.

Common things we see on site
Carriage safety mechanism not made, preventing film carriage movement
Carriage safety mechanism not made (lift movement inhibited)
Film carriage rollers binding or dragging on the mast
Carriage rollers binding on the mast (drag / stalling under load)
Pre-stretch drive chain fault (film feed inconsistent / carriage load increases)
Pre-stretch rollers or film path issue causing film feed problems
Pre-stretch rollers / film path issue (film not feeding smoothly)

Does This Look Familiar?

Common symptoms when the film carriage isn’t running correctly:

  • Carriage does not travel up or down the mast
  • Carriage attempts to move then stalls or stops
  • Wrap cycle pauses with the carriage stationary
  • Uneven film feed / sudden increase in tension
  • Clicking or rattling from the carriage drive area

Typical Causes Behind This Fault

  • Safety circuit not made (carriage guard / interlock / safety mechanism)
  • Pre-stretch drive chain fault (broken, slack, or slipping under load)
  • Carriage rollers dragging on the mast creating high load
  • Height / position sensor not satisfied (home / limit / photocell)
  • Motor / inverter trip preventing carriage movement
  • Contamination / debris affecting rollers, guides, or drive components

When It Needs An Engineer

If the film carriage won’t travel up or down the mast after basic checks, it’s usually quicker to have the lift system inspected properly rather than forcing cycles or manually assisting movement.

! Carriage motor runs but the film carriage does not move
! Chain, belt, or lifting mechanism slipping or jammed
! Height sensors not being reached or resetting correctly
! Intermittent carriage movement stopping the wrap cycle

At this stage, structured fault-finding is usually more effective than continued resets — particularly where lift chains, belts, motors, or sensors are involved. Most film carriage faults are resolved quickly once the root cause is identified, and early intervention can prevent further mechanical wear or belt and chain damage.
